MELBOURNE, Australia - The San Francisco 49ers opened their first practice week Down Under with the same questions that followed them across the Pacific: how much of Nick Bosa and Christian McCaffrey will be available when the regular season starts against the Los Angeles Rams.
Bosa (knee) and McCaffrey did not take part in drills during the portion of Monday's session at AAMI Park that was open to reporters, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported via CBS Sports.
George Kittle worked individual drills, a positive sign as the tight end continues his return from an Achilles injury, according to 49ers Webzone's practice notes citing Maiocco and The Athletic's Matt Barrows.
Caution, not a surprise
Bosa made the trip after missing large stretches of camp with tendinitis in his surgically repaired right knee, the same knee that limited him to three games last season after an ACL tear. CBS Sports noted he had been working off to the side in recent practices before the team left California.
Being suited up for an unpadded practice without joining early team work still pointed toward caution rather than a new setback, 49ers Webzone wrote.
McCaffrey was on the field but did individual work away from the group during the open window, Barrows reported. Several teammates who had been managing soft-tissue issues, including Renardo Green, Romello Height, Jacob Cowing and Mike Evans, were back in the early period, per Barrows and ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Shanahan waits on the injury report
Coach Kyle Shanahan declined to give his usual first-day injury update. Because the Rams do not practice until Monday in California (Tuesday on Melbourne's clock), Shanahan said the 49ers were not required to discuss injuries until a day later, the Associated Press reported from Melbourne.
