Brady Singer hit two batters and walked another before Drew Cavanaugh came to the plate in the first inning Tuesday.
NBC Sports Bay Area wrote that Singer threw a pitch behind Gilbert, then hit him on the leg, walked Rafael Devers, and hit Jung Hoo Lee to load the bases. Turner Hill flied out. Cavanaugh, the catcher, then singled to center, scoring Devers and Gilbert with Lee moving to third, CBS Sports' play-by-play shows.
The San Francisco Giants led 2-0, and they did not trail in a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Oracle Park.
The Associated Press reported it was Cavanaugh's first career three-hit game. CBS Sports' box lists him 3-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. ESPN's box matches that line. He did not strike out. After the game he was listed at .253/.352/.264 with seven RBI.
Two more singles, then a walk
Cavanaugh added a single to left-center in the third, then another to deep right in the fifth after Devers had homered. In the seventh he walked with Lee on second. San Francisco went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position; Cavanaugh was the 1-for-1, ESPN's box shows. The Giants left 10 men on base.
NBC Sports Bay Area wrote that Cavanaugh's first-inning single put the Giants on the board first for a second straight night.
Devers' 28th homer, a drive ESPN measured at 400 feet that bounced into McCovey Cove, made it 3-0 in the fifth. The AP said it was his 16th homer at Oracle Park this season, the most by a Giant since Barry Bonds in 2007, and his third in five games.
Nate Furman, hitting behind Cavanaugh, collected his first major league hit in the third, a single that moved Cavanaugh to second. Furman had struck out with runners at the corners in the first.
