Pleasanton's City Council will go behind closed doors Monday afternoon with the appointment of a city manager on its agenda, more than four months after Gerry Beaudin left the job to run the city of Alameda.
The special closed session is set for 3:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, in the City Council Conference Room at 200 Old Bernal Ave. The agenda, posted on the city's meeting portal, lists two items: a public employee appointment for the title of city manager, and a performance evaluation of the city attorney.
Members of the public can comment on those items before the council goes into private session, in person or by Zoom, and the agenda calls for a report on the closed session afterward.
Where the search stands
Joe Calabrigo, who spent 32 years as Danville's town manager before retiring in 2025, has led Pleasanton on an interim basis since June 8. The Pleasanton Weekly reported at the time that his contract pays $25,000 a month with no benefits and runs until a permanent city manager takes office. The city hired the recruiting firm Bob Murray & Associates to conduct a nationwide search.
The council has met privately on the appointment before. City records show the same item on closed-session agendas on July 7 and Sept. 1, and the minutes of both meetings say there was no reportable action.
An agenda item does not mean a decision will be announced. Under the agenda's own wording, any action would be reported when the council comes back into open session.
Timing and the election
The search is unfolding weeks before the Nov. 3 election, when voters will choose a mayor and fill two council seats. When Calabrigo was hired, the Weekly noted that one open question was whether a permanent hire would be made before or after the election.
