A free Día de los Muertos celebration put on by the City of Pleasanton is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the city's Senior Center on Sunol Boulevard (5353 Sunol Blvd.).
The afternoon includes a bilingual storytime, live performances and viewing of ofrendas, the home altars families build to remember relatives and friends who have died, according to the Pleasanton Library's event listing. The event is part of the city's Cultural Celebration Series of free, family-oriented events, and the listing credits the Friends of the Pleasanton Library and the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council for support.
Building an ofrenda
The city's library and recreation department is inviting individuals and groups to create an ofrenda for a community exhibit titled "Día de Los Muertos: Honoring the Dead," which will be set up in the Senior Center's main hall. Spaces are first come, first served, and the reservation form must be emailed to the address listed on it by 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.
Participants set up between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Nov. 7, the public views the altars during the 1 to 3 p.m. program, and displays come down from 3 to 4 p.m., according to the form.
The day's schedule is posted on the Firehouse Arts Center's cultural celebration page. The library lists its information services line, 925-931-3400, option 4, for questions.
