Turner Hill singled in the first, singled home a run in the second, singled again in the fourth, and singled in the sixth. Four hits. The San Francisco Giants still left PNC Park with a loss.

Pittsburgh beat San Francisco 13-12 on Tuesday when Brandon Lowe scored from third on a throwing error by third baseman Osleivis Basabe with two outs in the ninth, the Associated Press reported. ESPN's box lists Hill 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, batting average .342. CBS Sports matches that hit total.

The Giants fell to 57-82 and own the National League's worst road record at 24-46. The Pirates improved to 68-71 and have won five of seven.

How Hill's hits fit the roller coaster

Hill's second-inning single scored Drew Cavanaugh and put Christian Koss in scoring position before Rafael Devers' three-run homer made it 5-2. Pittsburgh answered with nine in the third against Logan Webb and Braxton Roxby - the AP recap once spelled the reliever "Roxy," while ESPN and CBS boxes use Roxby.

Hill singled again in the fourth and walked into another rally in the sixth: Koss reached, Hill singled, and after a Devers strikeout and a Bryce Eldridge walk, Jonah Cox's infield single scored Koss and Jung Hoo Lee's groundout scored Hill to cut the deficit to 11-7.

San Francisco's five-run eighth tied it at 12. Cavanaugh's double drove in two; Nate Furman's single drove in two more. Mason Montgomery worked around two hits in the ninth for Pittsburgh.

Carson Seymour (0-1) allowed Lowe's leadoff single in the bottom half; after Nick Gonzales singled and Oneil Cruz reached on a fielder's choice, Rafael Flores Jr.'s grounder to third was fielded cleanly, but Basabe's throw short-hopped Devers at first and Lowe scored, the AP said. ESPN's scoring play credits the run on Basabe's throwing error.

The AP spelled Basabe's first name Oseilvis; ESPN and CBS use Osleivis.

Webb's early collapse, Skenes' unfinished night

Webb lasted two innings with nine hits and nine earned runs. Cesar Perdomo steadied the middle with four innings of one-run ball. Paul Skenes, the reigning NL Cy Young winner, allowed five runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings with three walks and four strikeouts on 95 pitches; his ERA rose to 3.97, and he has not won since mid-July, per the AP.

Lowe finished with four hits including his 29th home run. Cruz had four hits and four RBIs. Gonzales went 3-for-5 and lifted his average to .310.

Same series, different starter

Landen Roupp (8-13, 4.25 ERA) starts Wednesday for San Francisco against Bubba Chandler (6-9, 4.26). Hill's four-hit night kept the Giants in a 25-run game that ended on an error. The contact was there; the last throw was not.
