Simpson ignites late rally

Ty Simpson’s fourth-quarter performance proved decisive as the visiting Los Angeles Rams defeated the host Kansas City Chiefs 20-12 on Saturday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The Rams’ first victory of the preseason season came after a scoreless first quarter and a tight second half, with Simpson connecting on two touchdown passes to Dean Connors to seal the win.

The game drew a crowd of 72,451 fans for the August 15 matchup.

Scoring timeline

The Rams took an early lead when Harrison Mevis kicked a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Chiefs responded in the second period with a 37-yard field goal by Harrison Butker to tie the game at 3-3. Mevis then extended the Rams' lead with a 40-yard field goal, but Butker answered with a 35-yard kick to level the score at 6-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Butker struck again with a 59-yard field goal, giving the Chiefs a 9-6 lead heading into the final period. The Rams remained scoreless in the third quarter, while the Chiefs added three points.

Decisive fourth quarter

The momentum shifted dramatically in the fourth quarter when Simpson found Connors on a 9-yard pass for a touchdown, cutting the Chiefs' lead to 13-9. Simpson and Connors connected again on a 2-yard pass to give the Rams a 20-9 lead. Butker kicked a 26-yard field goal late in the game to narrow the final margin to 20-12.

Simpson finished with 190 passing yards on 21-of-25 completion, including two touchdowns. On the ground, Jordan Waters rushed for 37 yards on five carries, while Brennan Presley led receiving with 58 yards on four catches.

Chiefs performance

The Chiefs’ offense was led by Garrett Nussmeier, who completed 13 of 19 passes for 98 yards. Emmett Johnson carried the ball 12 times for 59 yards, and Jaydn Ott caught two passes for 40 yards. Despite Butker’s four field goals and the team’s home advantage, the Chiefs could not overcome the Rams’ late surge.

The result improves the Rams’ record to 1-0, while the Chiefs drop to 0-1 in the preseason.
