Nader Hanna, an 18-year-old from Dublin, is recounting the events that led to the loss of his right hand following a firework accident in Pleasanton. The incident occurred in early June near an In-N-Out Burger on Johnson Drive, according to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle.
Hanna was celebrating with friends and his twin brother, Ramsey, shortly after graduating from high school. A classmate provided Hanna with a firework described as being the size of a tennis ball. When Hanna ignited the device, it detonated with significant force. Hanna later described the sensation to the Chronicle, stating that his hand absorbed the entire impact and appeared to disintegrate upon looking down.
Initial shock gave way to panic as Hanna realized the extent of the injury. He ran toward his companions while screaming. Ramsey Hanna called emergency services and then searched the street for fragments of his brother’s hand. Police officers arrived at the scene and applied two tourniquets to the injury before transporting Nader Hanna to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Witnesses described the severity of the wound. Kevan Mokashi, a friend of Hanna’s, told the Chronicle that the injury resembled flesh that had been processed, with no recognizable hand structure remaining and significant blood loss. Mokashi noted that the group was in a state of extreme distress.
Hanna has stated that he views the accident as part of a divine plan and is attempting to maintain a positive outlook. As a left-handed individual, he is now adjusting to performing daily tasks with his remaining hand, including driving and personal hygiene. He credits his family, friends, and church community for their support during this period.
