Whitcomb Closes Out Marathon

Shay Whitcomb provided the decisive moment in a 12-inning thriller at Oracle Park, reaching on an infield single to shortstop in the 11th inning. The play scored Furman and secured a 5-4 victory for the San Francisco Giants over the St. Louis Cardinals. It marked Whitcomb’s first career game-ending RBI.

The Giants improved to 60-85, while the Cardinals fell to 72-73. Attendance at the venue was 25,833.

Scoring Sequence

The Cardinals took an early lead in the first inning when Devers doubled to right, allowing Hill to score. Eldridge added to the advantage in the third with a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Koss. The lead grew to three runs in the fifth when Eldridge doubled to center and Devers crossed the plate.

Burleson trimmed the deficit in the sixth with a 431-foot home run to right. Church doubled to right in the seventh, scoring Gorman and making it 3-2. Fermín hit a sacrifice fly to left in the ninth, bringing in Báez to tie the game at 3-3.

Extra Innings Drama

The game remained tied going into the 10th. Bernal singled to right, scoring Burleson to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. However, Eldridge singled to center moments later, scoring Hill and tying the game at 4-4. The 11th inning provided the final answer as Whitcomb’s single to shortstop scored Furman for the winning run.

Pitching Performance

Logan Webb pitched six innings for the Giants, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters. Jason Foley earned the win, pitching two innings, allowing one hit and one base on balls, and recording no earned runs. On the mound for St. Louis, Michael McGreevy threw 6.2 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.

George Soriano took the loss after one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and one base on balls.
