The San Francisco 49ers have placed veteran defensive end Sam Okuayinonu on injured reserve due to a foot injury, which will sideline him for at least the first four games of the 2026 season.

Okuayinonu did not travel with the team to Australia for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams after the injury was sustained. His absence is a notable setback, especially following a 2025 season where he played a significant role, starting 12 of the 15 games he participated in and recording 39 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble.

Although Okuayinonu's role was anticipated to decrease in 2026, he was still expected to be a key contributor to the 49ers' defensive line. The injury disrupts those plans as the team prepares for their upcoming campaign.

In addition to Okuayinonu's placement on injured reserve, the 49ers have made other roster adjustments. They signed Jon Weeks to the 53-man roster and promoted Khalid Kareem from the practice squad, further reshaping their lineup ahead of the season opener.

With Okuayinonu out, the 49ers will have to adjust their defensive strategy as they face the Rams in their first game of the season.
