The San Francisco 49ers are facing another injury concern as rookie edge rusher Romello Height has tweaked his ankle, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. While the injury is not expected to keep Height from participating in Week 1, he will miss the preseason finale and practice time, potentially hindering his development after two lackluster preseason performances.
With Height's injury, the 49ers are reportedly in a position of urgency regarding their pass rush. There are uncertainties surrounding Nick Bosa's availability for the start of the season, which raises concerns about Height's ability to serve as the primary edge rusher. Height is viewed as better suited for a complementary role rather than leading the pass rush.
In light of these developments, the 49ers may want to consider signing pass rusher Haason Reddick. Teams have shown interest in Reddick, and the 49ers previously explored a trade for Vita Vea before he signed a contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Currently, only rookie Gracen Halton has shown promise in the pass-rushing department, alongside Bosa and Osa Odighizuwa.
The 49ers face a critical decision regarding their defensive front, as they need to bolster their edge-rushing capabilities. The team's ability to score points may influence their decision on whether to wait for a player to emerge or to actively pursue a signing like Reddick, who was previously viewed as a less favorable option.
