The Los Angeles Chargers held their first practice of the 2026 season in preparation for their upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals, scheduled for Sunday.
During the preseason, the Chargers managed to avoid significant injuries, though they did lose starting center Tyler Biadasz for the season due to a severe knee injury sustained during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers. Offensive lineman Branson Taylor will also begin the season on injured reserve due to an injury, but he has been designated to return.
The coaching staff took a cautious approach with minor injuries throughout the preseason. While the first official injury report of the season will be released later this week, the team is already receiving positive updates on player health.
Notably, running back Keaton Mitchell and wide receiver Brenen Thompson have returned to practice after missing several sessions. Mitchell's injury raised concerns that he might start the season on injured reserve, but general manager Joe Hortiz indicated that it was not a significant issue, as the team opted not to place him on injured reserve.
Mitchell's speed as a receiving option presents mismatches for opposing defenses, and quarterback Justin Herbert has shown confidence in utilizing him during training camp. Similarly, Thompson's return enhances the offense's ability to stretch the field, creating additional space for both the run game and pass catchers.
