The Los Angeles Chargers are finalizing preparations for their 2026 season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, which is set for Monday morning. However, several offseason issues remain unresolved, including the status of edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu, who has yet to secure a contract extension and is entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Negotiations between Tuipulotu's agents, David Canter and Ness Mugrabi of Aura Sports Group, and the Chargers have not resulted in an agreement. Factors contributing to the delay include recent contract extensions for other edge rushers, notably Nick Herbig of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who received a four-year, $100 million deal.

Herbig's extension complicates the negotiations as Tuipulotu's performance metrics are being compared to those of Herbig, who had fewer pressures and sacks than Tuipulotu last season.

Tuipulotu, who turned 24 on September 3, is the youngest edge rusher in the Chargers' lineup despite being in his fourth NFL season. His productivity has been attributed to both his effort and the defensive scheme, and there is potential for further development in his pass-rushing techniques.

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz conveyed a message to Tuipulotu during an appearance on the Chargers Weekly podcast, expressing the team's desire to finalize a deal. Hortiz stated, "When we get to a spot where you feel good about it, we will get it done," indicating that the organization values Tuipulotu and is willing to continue discussions.

With the season approaching, it remains to be seen whether a contract agreement will be reached before the game against the Cardinals. Further details on the negotiations have not yet been disclosed.
