Stan Kroenke, owner of the Los Angeles Rams, has reached a definitive agreement to acquire the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno's family. The announcement was made by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, confirming the sale on September 1, 2026.
The deal is reported to be for a record $4 billion, surpassing the previous MLB record of $3.9 billion set by the San Diego Padres earlier in 2026.
The transaction is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2027. While Forbes valued the Angels at $2.8 billion in March, the sale price reflects a significant increase. Kroenke expressed optimism about the team's future, while Moreno acknowledged the honor of owning the franchise for 23 years.
Moreno, who became the first Latino majority owner in Major League Baseball when he purchased the Angels from the Walt Disney Company for $180 million in 2003, has faced challenges during his tenure. Although the Angels had early success, making the playoffs five times in his first seven years, they have not reached the postseason since 2014, marking the longest active drought in the league.
Under Moreno's ownership, the team made several high-profile signings, including stars like Albert Pujols and Anthony Rendon, but these moves often did not yield the expected results. The franchise did draft Mike Trout in 2009, who became one of the best players in baseball, yet the team only made the playoffs once during his career.
