As the Los Angeles Rams prepare for the final week of the preseason, head coach Sean McVay has indicated that the running back position may present some challenging decisions as the team reduces its roster from 90 to 53 players.
During a recent media session, McVay emphasized his trust in running back Ronnie Rivers, stating, "Trust is a big word. I trust Ronnie Rivers. I trust that he knows what he's doing." He highlighted Rivers' effectiveness in pass protection and his ability to contribute to the running and passing games, suggesting that Rivers is a reliable option behind starters Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.
McVay's comments signal that Rivers is likely to secure the RB3 position, which could complicate the roster prospects for other running backs, including Jarquez Hunter, Jordan Waters, and Dean Connors. Rivers has not played in the first two preseason games, a typical indicator that he is expected to play a significant role in the regular season, as McVay usually reserves playing time for key contributors.
In contrast, Hunter, Waters, and Connors have all seen action in the preseason, but none have made a compelling case to surpass Rivers. Hunter has recorded 21 carries for 103 yards and one touchdown, while Waters has 15 carries for 91 yards.
Connors has managed 8 carries for 27 yards and has been more effective in the passing game, with four receptions for 29 yards and two touchdowns, all coming in the first preseason game.
