San Francisco opened the season 8,000 miles from Levi's Stadium and still looked like the sharper NFC West team. Brock Purdy threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns, the defense squeezed reigning MVP Matthew Stafford into a quiet night, and the 49ers walked out of Melbourne Cricket Ground with a 27-7 win in the NFL's first regular-season game in Australia.
A crowd of 100,021 packed the MCG on a local workday morning timed for a U.S. prime-time window. Reuters reported it as the seventh-largest regular-season NFL crowd and the second-largest for an international game, trailing only the 49ers-Cardinals matchup at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium in 2005 (103,467).
George Kittle captured the mood afterward: the atmosphere was electric, the juice stayed high, and a division win on that stage mattered.
Early arrival, different night
The travel split may become the opener's lasting subplot. San Francisco landed in Melbourne a week early to push through jet lag and reset clocks against the West Coast time difference. The Rams arrived the day before kickoff and largely stuck to their normal U.S. routines.
After the loss, Sean McVay defended the approach, calling the night humbling and framing it as a lesson rather than a referendum on one schedule choice.
On the field, the 49ers controlled the middle stretches. Eddy Pineiro opened the scoring with a first-quarter field goal. Los Angeles answered in the second when Stafford hit Puka Nacua for 41 yards and Kyren Williams finished from 5 yards out.
Purdy answered before halftime with a 39-yard touchdown to Demarcus Robinson that made it 10-7. Mike Evans, in his San Francisco debut, scored his first touchdown with the club on a 2-yard catch early in the third for 17-7. The defense then stuffed consecutive goal-line chances, denying Nacua and a Stafford sneak by inches.
Purdy found Deebo Samuel for a 15-yard score early in the fourth to push the lead to 24-7.
NBC Sports Bay Area charted Purdy at 25 of 34. Christian McCaffrey ran for 68 yards on 10 carries, and rookie Kaelon Black added 65 on 14 in his NFL debut, including a first-half burst that set up the Robinson throw after a play fake.
Stafford finished 15 of 25 for 155 yards with one interception and no touchdowns before he was pulled late in the fourth. Kyle Shanahan moved to 12-7 in his head-to-head series with McVay.
