Cal spent much of Sunday’s field hockey match pressing for a goal, then needed less than a minute of overtime to finish the job.

The Golden Bears defeated Virginia 2–1 on Oct. 4 in Charlottesville for their first ACC victory of the season. Cal improved to 7–3 overall and 1–2 in conference play.

The result followed a substantial advantage in chances. The official box score credits Cal with 25 shots to Virginia’s six and 17 penalty corners to the Cavaliers’ two. Still, an early Virginia goal held up through halftime.

Cal equalized with 3:23 remaining in the third quarter. Neither side scored in the fourth, when the Bears prevented Virginia from registering a shot or penalty corner.

The winner arrived 50 seconds into overtime after another spell of corner pressure. Cal’s match report describes four consecutive penalty-corner opportunities before the decisive conversion.

The Bears now return to Berkeley for their final homestand, with Wake Forest scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9, and Duke on Sunday, Oct. 11. Sunday’s breakthrough gives Cal a conference win to take into that stretch after a game in which the score stayed close long after the chance totals had separated.
