Henry Bolte had never had a four-hit game in the majors. Wednesday night at Sutter Health Park, the rookie used five at-bats to change that.
The Associated Press reported that Bolte went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI double as the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3. Donovan Walton's three-run homer in the first set the tone; Bolte's bat kept the night from becoming a one-inning story.
Four hits, an RBI double, and a 5-0 cushion
Lawrence Butler opened the scoring with an RBI single before Walton's ninth home run, a two-out shot off Walbert Urena, made it 4-0 in the first, per the AP. Bolte's RBI double in the second pushed the Athletics (63-95) ahead 5-0 and gave him the first of four hits on the night.
Mike Trout and Vaughn Grissom answered with back-to-back homers off Jeffrey Springs in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2. Trout's 22nd of the season was the 426th of his career. Grissom's 13th, followed by an RBI single in the fifth, made it 5-3 and chased Springs after 4 1/3 innings and three runs on five hits.
Bolte was not done. He singled again in the sixth, part of a rally with Alika Williams that Shea Langeliers turned into the final margin with a two-run double. Geoff Hartlieb earned the win (2-1) with five outs of relief. Elvis Alvarado struck out two in the ninth to close it.
Series clinched, Angels still chasing 100 losses
Urena (9-11) lasted four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits after giving up five runs across his previous three starts and 21 innings, the AP noted. Athletics catcher Brian Serven left after fouling a bunt off his left eye in the sixth.
