Jacob Lopez did not need a high pitch count or a pile of strikeouts to win the game that settled the American League West's historic ceiling. The Athletics left-hander worked six innings, allowed two hits and one run, walked two and struck out four Friday night at Sutter Health Park, and Oakland held on for a 6-5 victory over the Houston Astros.

One mistake, then a shutdown

That sequencing mattered. Houston entered the night tied with Texas atop a division that would produce baseball's first full-season postseason club without a winning record. Lopez's ability to limit damage to a single swing gave the Athletics' lineup one chance to flip the game, and the sixth inning supplied it.

Sixth-inning chaos after Lopez handed it over

Jose Altuve's error helped spark Oakland's six-run sixth after Hunter Brown (6-4) was lifted, the AP reported. Pinch-hitter Michael Stefanic singled home two. Jonah Heim added an RBI single. Henry Bolte cleared the bases with a two-run triple, and Lawrence Butler's fielder's choice scored Bolte for a 6-1 cushion.

Houston answered with Cam Smith's solo homer in the seventh and three more runs in the eighth. Luis Medina escaped the eighth still ahead, and Harris finished the ninth. Lopez was already in the dugout by then, but the win belonged to the starter who had handed the bullpen a one-run deficit to erase and a quiet early night on the mound.

Standings that Lopez helped freeze

Both Houston and Texas sat at 79-81 after Texas lost 10-2 at Minnesota, the AP noted. An Athletics win did not eliminate Houston, but it did confirm that whichever club claims the West will do so at .500 or worse.

Lopez's outing was the practical reason Oakland could force that math: six innings, one earned run, and a lineup that finally cashed in once he left.

The Athletics will start right-hander Jack Perkins on Saturday against Houston, according to the AP notes. Houston had not announced a starter. Whatever Saturday brings, Friday already framed Lopez as the pitcher who kept the Astros to Walker's solo and left the rest of the night to a bullpen and a six-run inning.

For a 64-96 Athletics club, nights like this are rare enough to mark. Lopez did not dominate the strike zone the way an ace might, and he did not need to. He stranded traffic, limited Houston to two hits, and gave Oakland the exact length required for one messy half-inning to decide a game with division-title history attached.

That is the box line that travels: six innings, one run, and a 6-5 scoreboard that still stood when Harris threw the last pitch.
