Mike Evans turned a second-and-21 into the play that flipped San Francisco's afternoon at Lumen Field.

An intentional grounding flag had pushed the 49ers back to the Seattle 37 early in the fourth quarter, in a game where neither offense had put together much of a drive. Brock Purdy threw deep right and Evans hauled in a 28-yard catch to the Seahawks' 9. Two plays later Purdy hit Brandin Cooks for a 7-yard touchdown, then found Evans again for the two-point conversion.

San Francisco led 29-26 with 11:02 left in the fourth and finished a 32-29 win that kept the 49ers unbeaten at 5-0.

Evans finished with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets. His longest gain was that 28-yarder. He also took the two-point pass from Purdy after Seattle's Josh Jobe was flagged for defensive pass interference on the first conversion try.

Milestone and early strike

Evans opened the scoring in the first quarter. Renardo Green intercepted Sam Darnold on Seattle's opening series, and Purdy needed only four plays from the Seahawks' 18. A 13-yard throw to Evans moved San Francisco to the 2, and Purdy hit him again for the touchdown at 11:12 of the first.

That score was Evans' 111th career receiving touchdown, tying Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez for ninth on the NFL's all-time list, according to 49ers.com. The team noted he played through a rib injury and still produced three receptions of 20 or more yards.

"He's a difference maker," Christian McCaffrey said after the game, per 49ers.com. "It's really cool when you get new guys that come in and they just continue to up the standard that the Niners have built for so long."

Contested catches when it mattered

Until San Francisco got the ball back trailing 26-21 late in the third quarter, no touchdown drive by either team had covered more than 25 yards, the Associated Press reported. The teams combined for seven turnovers, the most in any NFL game this season. On the go-ahead possession, Purdy and Evans hooked up four times for 75 yards, with the 28-yarder after the grounding penalty the biggest gain.

"I do feel like I'm one of the best receivers in the game," Evans said, per the AP. "I got a big frame, so if you throw it around me, I'm going to do my best to try to make those contested grabs."

Purdy finished 19-of-29 for 189 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He described Evans' afternoon in similar terms. "He's a game changer," Purdy said, per the AP.

"True X receiver that if you get the right look and stuff and you give him a chance, he can make defenses pay. I thought today he did a great job with that, going up and getting the ball multiple times and just using his length and everything to create some separation."

Seattle tied the game at 29 on a Jason Myers 40-yard field goal. Purdy then directed an eight-play, 43-yard drive that ended with Eddy Pineiro's 44-yard field goal with 1:56 left.

Malik Mustapha sealed it, stopping Cooper Kupp a yard short of the line to gain on fourth-and-10 from midfield after Jaxon Smith-Njigba had dropped a third-down throw. Deebo Samuel hurt his hamstring on a third-quarter play on which he fumbled and did not return, the AP reported. San Francisco hosts Washington on Monday, Oct. 19.
