Drivers heading between Pleasanton, Sunol and Fremont on Highway 84 will need another route Saturday night. Caltrans plans to fully close SR-84, also known as Niles Canyon Road, at the Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge in Sunol from 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, until 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, while crews pour concrete for the new bridge deck.

The closure covers only the stretch of SR-84 between Sunol Corners and Main Street. Unlike the September closure for girder installation, no ramps or other parts of the highway will close, the agency said. Main Street, Paloma Way and all freeway ramps and exits stay open.

Detours

Caltrans listed these routes, several of which run over Pleasanton streets:

  • Westbound from Livermore toward Sunol: northbound I-680 to the Sunol Boulevard exit, west on Sunol Boulevard and Castlewood Drive, then south on Foothill Road.
  • Westbound from Livermore toward Fremont: southbound I-680 to the SR-238 (Mission Boulevard) exit.
  • Eastbound from Sunol toward I-680: east on Main Street, north on Kilkare Road and Foothill Road, east on Castlewood Drive, then north on Pleasanton-Sunol Road to the I-680 on-ramp.
  • From Pleasanton-Sunol Road toward SR-84: north on Pleasanton-Sunol Road, east on Koopman Road onto northbound I-680, off at Sunol Boulevard, then west on Sunol Boulevard and Castlewood Drive and south on Foothill Road.
  • From Bond Street via Main Street: west on Main Street, north on Kilkare and Foothill roads, east on Castlewood Drive and north on Pleasanton-Sunol Road to I-680.

Message signs will guide drivers, and Caltrans advises allowing extra time through Sunol. The schedule depends on weather.

The project

The bridge being replaced was built in 1939. Construction started in May with the first stage on the north side. Caltrans says the new bridge will have a wider roadway and sidewalks that meet ADA standards, and is meant to improve safety through Niles Canyon and Sunol and travel among Pleasanton, Sunol, Fremont and Livermore.

Project updates are posted on the Caltrans District 4 Arroyo de la Laguna Bridge project page.
