Oasis closes Oct. 15 for a three-week move into the historic Pleasanton Hotel

The Afghan Mediterranean restaurant on Main Street since 2005 plans to reopen around Nov. 5 at 855 Main St., next door to its owners' Ruby & Roses, with the same menu and a new look.

Oasis Restaurant & Wine Lounge, a downtown Pleasanton fixture for two decades, will shut its doors Oct. 15 for roughly three weeks while it moves a short distance up Main Street into the Pleasanton Hotel building, the Pleasanton Weekly reported.

Omar Etemadi and his wife, Sadaf Shaghasi, the owners, told the Weekly they aim to reopen by Nov. 5 at 855 Main St. The new space puts Oasis beside Ruby & Roses, the restaurant the couple opened in the hotel building three years ago.

"Same menu, same food, just a new look," Etemadi said.

Why move now

The Afghan Mediterranean restaurant opened at 780 Main St. in 2005. With its lease there ending, Etemadi said, the couple decided the business was due for a change after two decades in the same building. He said he wants to raise the restaurant's profile through its decor and overall look, and described the hotel space as cozier and more upscale.

He told the Weekly he is not worried about losing regulars, since Oasis is moving only a few hundred feet, and that the history of the Pleasanton Hotel, one of the early buildings on Main Street, should bring in new diners.

"Oasis has been a part of our lives and our community for two decades, and while our location is changing, the heart of Oasis remains the same," Shaghasi said in a written statement provided to the Weekly.

What changes for diners

  • The restaurant will use the old main entrance of the Pleasanton Hotel as its front door.
  • Oasis and Ruby & Roses will keep separate entrances, dining rooms and kitchens, though parts of Ruby & Roses can be used as overflow for Oasis special events.
  • The new location has more parking and a larger bar but less patio space than the current site, so Oasis plans to use the Ruby & Roses patio for parties and events.
  • During the closure, Etemadi said, Ruby & Roses can still host some parties and events using Oasis dishes.

Etemadi said an Indian restaurant has already signed to take over the current storefront at 780 Main St. A posted ownership application notice in the Oasis window names Lunchbox US as the new owner, the Weekly reported.
