Walk-Off Victory in Extra Innings
Aristides Vargas delivered the decisive blow in the 10th inning, singling to left field to score Moreno and lift the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Oakland Athletics, 6-5, on Wednesday. The win improves Arizona’s record to 52-49, while Oakland falls to 43-58.
The game was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Diamondbacks build an early lead, only to watch it evaporate before eventually reclaiming the advantage in the extra frames. Arizona’s offense struck first in the top of the first inning when Kepler homered to right-center, a 392-foot shot that drove in Marte and Moreno to put the home team up 3-0.
Oakland answered in the third inning when Williams singled to right, bringing Butler home to make it 3-1. The Diamondbacks extended their lead in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Marte to center, scoring Vargas to push the margin to 4-1.
However, the Athletics mounted a comeback in the eighth. Langeliers launched a home run to left-center, a 444-foot blast, to cut the deficit to 4-2. Oakland tied the game in the ninth inning when Wilson homered to left, a 394-foot shot that also scored Walton, tying the score at 4-4.
Pitching Struggles and Late Rally
The game remained deadlocked until the 10th inning. Heim hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Soderstrom to give Oakland a 5-4 lead. But the Diamondbacks responded immediately. Arenado singled to center, driving in Carroll to tie the game at 5-5 and load the bases.
