Lowder, Reds bullpen help Cincinnati beat Athletics 3-2

Rhett Lowder allowed two earned runs over 6.0 innings, and Cincinnati scored the deciding run on Marte's sacrifice fly in a 3-2 win over the Athletics.

Lowder gives Cincinnati six innings

Rhett Lowder pitched 6.0 innings, and the Cincinnati Reds edged the Athletics 3-2 on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Lowder earned the win, improving to 4-7. He allowed four hits and two earned runs, walked two and struck out three. Cincinnati also got three combined innings from Brock Burke, Tejay Antone and Emilio Pagan without a hit or a walk.

Burke struck out three in 1 1/3 innings for his 13th hold, Antone recorded his seventh hold after two-thirds of an inning, and Pagan struck out one in one inning for his 13th save.

Athletics strike first

The Athletics opened the scoring in the top of the first when Butler homered to right center, a 415-foot drive that put the away team ahead 1-0. Cincinnati answered in the bottom of the second. Trevino singled to left, bringing in Marte to tie the game at 1.

Jacob Lopez kept the Reds to two earned runs over 5.0 innings for the Athletics. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out nine. The Reds moved in front in the bottom of the fifth, when McLain homered to right center, a 378-foot shot that made it 2-1.

Sixth inning decides it

The Athletics tied the score in the top of the sixth. Heim doubled to right, and Soderstrom scored to make it 2-2.

Cincinnati took the lead back in the bottom half. Marte hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Stewart for a 3-2 Reds advantage. Hayden Juenger took the loss for the Athletics, falling to 0-1 after giving up one earned run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. He walked none and struck out one.

Jose Suarez recorded one-third of an inning, allowing no hits, no earned runs and no walks. Scott Blewett worked 2.0 innings with no hits, no earned runs and no walks, striking out one.

Records

The final score accounted for all five runs: three for Cincinnati and two for the Athletics. The game drew 16,544 at Great American Ball Park. The Reds are 55-58 after the win, and the Athletics are 45-69 after the loss.
