Andrés Chaparro delivered a historic offensive display, hitting three home runs and driving in eight runs to lead the Washington Nationals to a 23-4 victory over the Sacramento Athletics on Saturday at Sutter Health Park. The Nationals’ slugger provided the firepower for a game that saw Washington rack up 23 runs, while the Athletics managed just four.
Chaparro’s performance included a solo shot in the fifth inning, a three-run homer in the seventh, and the groundwork for the team’s overwhelming lead throughout the contest.
Game Progression
Washington jumped out to an early 4-0 lead by the fourth inning. The scoring began in the third when Mead doubled to left, bringing Nuñez and Young home. Chaparro added another run with a single to left, scoring Mead.
In the fourth, Young’s ground rule double plated Ford before the Athletics responded in the same inning. Soderstrom hit a 415-foot home run to center field, scoring Wilson and making it 4-2.
The Nationals broke the game open in the fifth inning. Chaparro launched a 467-foot home run to left center, scoring Mead to make it 6-2. Ford followed with a home run to center, adding another run for a 8-2 advantage.
Washington’s offense continued to pile on in the sixth inning. Wood’s single to right scored Young and Nuñez. Chaparro then singled to center, driving in two more runs on errors that allowed Wood and Mead to score. Abrams doubled to center to score Chaparro, and Lile’s single to right added another run, pushing the score to 14-2.
In the seventh, Mead doubled to left, scoring Nuñez. Chaparro then hit his second home run of the game, a 406-foot shot to left field that scored Wood and Mead, extending the lead to 18-2. The Nationals added more runs in the ninth inning.
