Pleasanton — Gas prices in the Oakland area averaged $5.5250 per gallon for regular unleaded on June 28, according to AAA, down slightly from yesterday. That's down from $5.5830 a week ago and substantially lower than $6.0750 a month ago.
The statewide average in California stands at $5.4600, while the national average is $3.8670. Motorists in the Oakland area are paying more than the state average and more than the national average.
Gas prices in the Oakland area have fallen substantially from their highs. Prices have dropped about 62 cents over the past month, driven by lower crude oil costs and strong refinery output. Compared to a year ago, when the state average was $4.5990, drivers are now paying about 86 cents more per gallon.
