Pleasanton Library is inviting prospective adult literacy volunteers to a training session Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Pacific, according to its current event announcement.

The Pleasanton Reads program pairs volunteers with adults working on English reading, writing and conversation. Its event listing welcomes native English speakers and multilingual volunteers age 18 and older who are fluent in American English. Previous teaching or tutoring experience is helpful but not required.

Tutors meet with learners once a week for 90 minutes, plus preparation time. The library provides instructional materials and meeting space at no cost to participants. Volunteer roles also include conversation groups and book clubs for English learners.

The city’s volunteer program requires orientation, online workplace-conduct training and a city-paid Live Scan screening. For training arrangements and questions about joining, contact Pleasanton Reads at literacy@cityofpleasantonca.gov. The library is at 400 Old Bernal Ave.
