Rogers strikes out nine as Orioles use homers to beat Angels 5-2

Rogers sets the tone

Trevor Rogers struck out nine and walked none over six innings, helping the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Wednesday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Rogers allowed three hits and two earned runs and earned the win, improving to 7-7. Baltimore finished with five runs, all produced by home runs, and never trailed after breaking through in the fourth inning.

Baltimore builds with the long ball

The Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when O'Neill homered to left center, a 426-foot drive that scored Henderson. Mayo added another run in the same inning with a 436-foot homer to left center, giving Baltimore a 3-0 lead.

Los Angeles answered in the top of the sixth when Siri homered to left center, a 405-foot shot that cut the Orioles' lead to 3-1. In the top of the seventh, Meckler singled to left and Schanuel scored, bringing the Angels within 3-2.

Baltimore added separation in the bottom of the eighth. Taveras homered to right center, a 361-foot drive that scored Henderson and pushed the Orioles' lead to 5-2.

Pitching lines hold up

Reid Detmers took the loss for Los Angeles, falling to 3-8 after allowing four hits and three earned runs in four innings. He walked one and struck out five.

The Angels' bullpen included two scoreless innings from Shaun Anderson, who allowed one hit, walked none and struck out three. Ben Joyce pitched one inning with no hits, no earned runs, one walk and one strikeout. Jose Fermin pitched one inning, allowing one hit and two earned runs while striking out three.

For Baltimore, Alex Hoppe recorded his second hold after allowing one hit in 0.2 innings. Rico Garcia got his 14th hold with 0.1 innings. Yennier Cano pitched one inning with no hits, no walks and two strikeouts for his 10th hold. Andrew Kittredge earned his fifth save with one inning, allowing no hits or walks.

Records

The Orioles improved to 56-58 with the win. The Angels fell to 43-71. Attendance at Oriole Park at Camden Yards was 16,977.
