Hoerner's late homer helps Cubs pull away from Dodgers, 5-1

Hoerner gives Cubs the lift

Hoerner put Chicago in front with an infield single and later added a home run as the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Wrigley Field.

Hoerner reached on an infield single to second in the sixth inning, bringing in Bregman and moving Busch to second for a 2-1 Cubs lead. In the eighth, Hoerner homered to left center, a 381-foot shot that gave Chicago its final run.

Solo shots open the scoring

Los Angeles scored first in the second inning when Tucker homered to left center, a 376-foot drive that made it 1-0.

Chicago answered in the third. Swanson homered to left center, a 401-foot drive, tying the game at 1. The score stayed there until Hoerner’s sixth-inning infield single moved the Cubs ahead.

The Cubs added two more runs in the seventh. Crow-Armstrong singled to right, scoring Swanson for a 3-1 lead. Suzuki followed with a single to center that scored Crow-Armstrong, pushing the margin to 4-1.

Chicago pitching limits Los Angeles

Javier Assad allowed one earned run on four hits in 5.2 innings for Chicago. He walked two and struck out three.

Ryan Rolison earned the win, improving to 6-1, after pitching one inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout. Tyler Ferguson recorded his fourth hold with 0.1 innings, no hits, no earned runs, no walks and no strikeouts. Ryan Zeferjahn earned his 10th hold with one inning, no hits, no earned runs, no walks and no strikeouts.

Jacob Webb pitched one inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and no strikeouts.

Skubal takes the loss

Tarik Skubal took the loss for Los Angeles, falling to 7-6. He allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Alex Vesia gave up two earned runs on two hits in 0.2 innings. Evan Phillips allowed one hit and no earned runs in 0.1 innings. Edwin Diaz allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk in 0.2 innings, striking out one. Jack Dreyer pitched 0.1 innings with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout.

The announced attendance was 40,584. The Cubs improved to 65-49, while the Dodgers fell to 69-45.
