Machado powers Padres past Dodgers
Manny Machado provided the offensive spark for the San Diego Padres, homering to center field in the fourth inning to give the away team a 2-0 lead. The 409-foot shot also drove in Austin Harris, accounting for two of San Diego's five total runs. The Padres' performance was enough to secure a 5-1 victory over the host Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
The win improved the Padres' record to 88-70, while the Dodgers fell to 97-61.
Scoring sequence
San Diego built its lead early in the second half of the game. In the fourth inning, after Machado's homer, the Dodgers scored their only run of the contest when Teoscar Hernandez crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Willson Contreras. The Padres extended their advantage in the fifth inning.
Austin Harris grounded into a fielder's choice to the pitcher, allowing Salas to score on a throwing error by Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Later in the same frame, Machado hit a sacrifice fly to center, which scored Fernando Tatis Jr. The final run of the game came in the ninth inning when Taylor scored on a single by Fermin.
Pitching performance
Yoshinobu Yamamoto started for the Dodgers and pitched six innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while walking one batter and striking out four. He took the loss, dropping his record to 14-9. For the Padres, Robbie Ray took the mound for 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run.
He walked one batter and struck out two. Bradgley Rodriguez recorded the win, pitching two scoreless innings with one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts. His record improved to 4-3.
Other Padres relievers included Yuki Matsui, who pitched one inning, allowing one hit and one walk without giving up earned runs. Adrian Morejon also pitched one inning, allowing one hit and walking no batters while giving up no earned runs. David Morgan pitched 0.2 innings, allowing no hits or earned runs, with one walk and one strikeout.
Mason Miller closed the game with one scoreless inning, allowing no hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Kris Bubic pitched one scoreless inning for Los Angeles, while Jack Dreyer pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. Blake Treinen pitched 0.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with one walk.
