A recent investigation by the San Francisco Estuary Institute underscores the health advantages of rain gardens in Bay Area cities, particularly their role in filtering out toxic pollutants. The research identified a range of harmful substances, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and microplastics, that stormwater runoff transports into the Bay.
According to Senior Scientist Rebecca Sutton, Ph.D., the contaminants vary significantly, encompassing both regulated and emerging pollutants. The study focused on discovering effective strategies to prevent these harmful substances from entering local waterways.
Lead researcher Melissa Foley, Ph.D., from the Resilient Landscapes Program, shared that tests were conducted on stormwater entering and exiting rain gardens at four sites in San Francisco. The findings revealed that these gardens effectively reduced levels of 21 different contaminants, with many pollutants decreasing by 90% or more.
The study also assessed the rain gardens' capacity to filter emerging contaminants, which were not their primary design focus. The results were encouraging, showing that rain gardens successfully removed various unregulated pollutants, including microplastics and toxins from vehicle tires.
Foley expressed excitement about these unexpected benefits, stating, "This was actually a really exciting co-benefit that comes with this type of technology where we're actually removing all kinds of additional chemicals."
San Francisco has nearly 600 rain gardens planned or built, aiming to capture about one billion gallons of water each year by 2050. The Estuary Institute hopes these results will motivate other cities to implement similar measures to safeguard the San Francisco Bay and enhance water quality.
