An abandoned puppy in Pleasanton has been adopted into a new home following a rescue operation by local authorities. The incident occurred during a recent heat wave in the Sterling Greens neighborhood, where the animal had sought shade beneath a parked vehicle after being left behind.
A resident noticed the distressed animal and contacted the Pleasanton Police Department before it could suffer harm. An Animal Services Officer responded to the scene, provided care for the puppy, and began investigating the circumstances of the abandonment.
Police identified the individual responsible for leaving the dog. The case has been forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review. Under California law, abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail. Additional charges may apply if the animal sustained injuries.
The Pleasanton Police Department noted that dogs are particularly vulnerable to overheating and that hot pavement can burn their paws. Authorities emphasized that there are legal alternatives for those unable to care for a pet.
Residents are encouraged to surrender animals to the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin, contact local rescue organizations, or seek assistance with pet food through the Valley Humane Society. The shelter’s Animal Services team also provides access to other available resources.
