San Ramon police arrested a 33-year-old Walnut Creek resident on suspicion of grand theft after identifying him through a distinctive tattoo. The identification process began when a Union City detective recognized the suspect from a flyer as a former colleague from before his law enforcement career.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on Aug. 10 at a Safeway located on San Ramon Valley Boulevard. The individual entered the store and took a cash register, removing less than $200 in cash along with the $1,000 device. Police later linked the suspect to the crime by comparing surveillance footage with a video of his standup comedy performance at Tommy T’s in Pleasanton.
Both recordings displayed a distinct rectangular tattoo on the same arm.
Officers went to the man’s apartment in Walnut Creek and booked him on the grand theft warrant. He has since been released, and court records indicate that no formal charges have been filed as of the latest update.
