Large employers in the Tri-Valley have filed notices covering more than 400 layoffs since July, according to state WARN data reported by Pleasanton Weekly. The paper said no other community in Alameda or Contra Costa counties saw as many job cuts at big companies over the same stretch.
Workday
Workday, which is headquartered in Pleasanton, told 142 employees on Sept. 29 that their jobs would end Nov. 1. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing the same day, the company said the reorganization was meant "to better align team structures with Workday's strategic growth priorities" and amounted to about 2.5% of its workforce, mostly in its product and technology group. Workday said it plans to keep hiring in key areas through fiscal 2027.
The Pleasanton cuts include over 40 managers in software development and 21 automation engineers, along with the company's chief technology officer for North America and several vice presidents, among them leaders in software development engineering, marketing and product management.
Chevron, Oracle, Kaiser and Safeway
The single largest reduction came from Chevron, which eliminated 178 jobs in San Ramon, according to its WARN notice. Those cuts included upward of 20 jobs in legal counsel and analysis and over a dozen cybersecurity jobs. Chevron said this summer the work would move to its headquarters in Texas, where the company relocated in 2024.
Oracle laid off 68 people at its Owens Drive office in Pleasanton effective Nov. 13. The list includes senior and vice president level software engineering jobs and five engineering directors.
