Rodriguez steadies Padres in 5-1 win over Diamondbacks

Rodriguez gives San Diego a lift

Bradgley Rodriguez gave the San Diego Padres two scoreless, hitless innings without a walk and earned the win Friday, August 7, 2026, in a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Rodriguez struck out one and improved to 3-2. He was part of a San Diego pitching group that limited Arizona to one run in the final score. Walker Buehler went four innings for the Padres, allowing six hits, one earned run and one walk with three strikeouts.

Padres build the early lead

San Diego went ahead in the first inning. Machado grounded into a double play, shortstop to second to first, and Tatis Jr. scored on the play while Rengifo was out at second for a 1-0 Padres lead.

The Padres added two runs in the third. Machado grounded out to shortstop, bringing in Cronenworth and moving Rengifo to second and Tatis Jr. to third. France followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Tatis Jr. and sending Rengifo to third for a 3-0 lead.

Arizona answered in the bottom of the third. Moreno singled to right and Carroll scored, cutting San Diego’s lead to 3-1. That was the Diamondbacks’ only run of the game.

San Diego adds on late

The Padres extended the margin in the sixth when Fermin singled to center, scoring Merrill and moving Bogaerts to second. In the seventh, Merrill singled to right and Machado scored, giving San Diego the final 5-1 margin.

There were no home runs in the game. San Diego’s scoring came on two groundouts, a sacrifice fly and two singles.

Pitching and records

Kohl Drake took the loss for Arizona, falling to 0-1. He allowed six hits, three earned runs and one walk with one strikeout in 3.2 innings. Jonathan Loaisiga pitched 1.1 innings with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Philip Abner allowed four hits, two earned runs and two walks with one strikeout in three innings, and Juan Morillo allowed two hits in one inning.

For San Diego, Jeremiah Estrada pitched one inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout. Adrian Morejon allowed one hit and struck out three in one inning, and Mason Miller allowed one hit and struck out two in one inning.

The attendance was 21884. Arizona is 61-55 after the loss, while San Diego is 60-56.
