Machado drives in four as Padres handle Diamondbacks 9-4

Machado sets the tone

Machado drove in four runs, and the San Diego Padres built a big lead before beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

San Diego, the away team, scored in the top of the first inning and kept adding on. Machado doubled to left to bring in Tatis Jr. for a 1-0 lead. Merrill followed with a single to right that scored Machado, and Bogaerts singled to center to bring in Merrill, making it 3-0.

Padres extend the lead

The Padres added three more runs in the top of the second. Machado singled to right, scoring Bowen and Tatis Jr., with Rengifo moving to third. Merrill then singled to right to score Rengifo and move Machado to third, giving San Diego a 6-0 advantage.

Randy Vasquez made that early lead hold. He pitched 6.0 scoreless innings for San Diego, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one. Vasquez earned the win and improved to 7-6.

Arizona's Eduardo Rodriguez took the loss, falling to 10-4. He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed 11 hits, five earned runs and no walks with four strikeouts.

Arizona answers in the seventh

San Diego increased the margin in the top of the sixth when Machado singled to center and scored Rengifo, making it 7-0. In the top of the seventh, Fermin doubled to center to score Merrill, with Song moving to third, pushing the Padres ahead 8-0.

Arizona got all four of its runs in the bottom of the seventh. Arenado homered to left center, a 400-foot drive, with Barrosa scoring. McCann then homered to left center, a 395-foot shot, with Tawa scoring, cutting San Diego's lead to 8-4. Those were the only two home runs in the game.

German Marquez pitched 1.0 inning for San Diego, allowing four hits, four earned runs and one walk with one strikeout. Bradgley Rodriguez pitched 1.0 scoreless inning with no hits, no walks and one strikeout, and Griffin Canning pitched 1.0 scoreless inning with no hits, no walks and no strikeouts.

Closing it out

San Diego added its final run in the top of the ninth on Cronenworth's single to right, scoring Song and moving Fermin to third.

For Arizona, Ryan Thompson allowed three hits, one earned run and one walk in 0.1 innings. Paul Sewald and Gerardo Carrillo each pitched 1.0 scoreless inning with no hits, no walks and one strikeout. Jonathan Loaisiga allowed two hits, one earned run and one walk in 1.0 inning.

The attendance was 20,839. San Diego improved to 59-55, while Arizona fell to 60-54.
