Machado sets the tone
Machado drove in four runs, and the San Diego Padres built a big lead before beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
San Diego, the away team, scored in the top of the first inning and kept adding on. Machado doubled to left to bring in Tatis Jr. for a 1-0 lead. Merrill followed with a single to right that scored Machado, and Bogaerts singled to center to bring in Merrill, making it 3-0.
Padres extend the lead
The Padres added three more runs in the top of the second. Machado singled to right, scoring Bowen and Tatis Jr., with Rengifo moving to third. Merrill then singled to right to score Rengifo and move Machado to third, giving San Diego a 6-0 advantage.
Randy Vasquez made that early lead hold. He pitched 6.0 scoreless innings for San Diego, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one. Vasquez earned the win and improved to 7-6.
Arizona's Eduardo Rodriguez took the loss, falling to 10-4. He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed 11 hits, five earned runs and no walks with four strikeouts.
Arizona answers in the seventh
San Diego increased the margin in the top of the sixth when Machado singled to center and scored Rengifo, making it 7-0. In the top of the seventh, Fermin doubled to center to score Merrill, with Song moving to third, pushing the Padres ahead 8-0.
