Ty France and Jackson Merrill led a massive offensive outburst for the San Diego Padres, combining for four home runs as San Diego defeated the Kansas City Royals 19-2 at Kauffman Stadium. France went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and a solo shot, while Merrill added two home runs, including a two-run blast in the ninth inning.
Fernando Tatis Jr. also contributed significantly with two home runs of his own.
The Padres’ hitting was relentless from the start. In the second inning, they erupted for four runs. Tatis Jr. singled to right, driving in Bowen and Rengifo, before Merrill singled to bring Campusano home.
Machado followed with a sacrifice fly to score Tatis Jr., extending the lead to 4-1. The Padres added another run in the third when Bowen doubled and Campusano singled to score him, making it 6-1.
Pitching Struggles
Kansas City’s pitching staff struggled to contain the Padres’ lineup. Noah Cameron took the loss after allowing seven earned runs in five innings. He was followed by Matt Strahm, Beck Way, Lucas Erceg, and Tyler Tolbert, who allowed six of the final runs in relief. Tolbert’s inning was particularly costly, as he gave up six hits and six earned runs.
On the mound for San Diego, Yuki Matsui earned the win, pitching two hitless innings with three strikeouts. Randy Vasquez secured the save with three scoreless frames. German Marquez started for the Padres, giving up two earned runs in three innings, while Wandy Peralta closed the game with a perfect inning.
