Pfaadt, Tawa carry Diamondbacks to 5-1 win over Padres

Brandon Pfaadt allowed no earned runs over 6.2 innings, and Tawa hit a three-run homer as Arizona beat San Diego 5-1 at Chase Field.

Pfaadt sets the pace

Brandon Pfaadt gave Arizona a long, effective outing, and Tawa supplied the game’s biggest swing as the Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 5-1 on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

Pfaadt earned the win to improve to 6-1 after pitching 6.2 innings. He allowed five hits, no earned runs and one walk while striking out three. Arizona’s bullpen followed with Juan Morillo pitching 1.1 innings with one hit allowed, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts for his 14th hold.

Brandyn Garcia pitched one inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and no strikeouts.

Tawa breaks it open

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Arizona turned one swing into a 3-0 lead. Tawa homered to left, a 404-foot drive, with Marte and Del Castillo scoring ahead of him. It was the only home run of the game.

Michael King took the loss for San Diego, falling to 6-8. He pitched five innings and allowed five hits, three earned runs and four walks with five strikeouts.

San Diego did not score until the top of the seventh. Campusano reached on an infield single to third, and France scored on a throwing error by third baseman Arenado. Rengifo was safe at third on the error, cutting Arizona’s lead to 3-1.

Arizona adds insurance

The Diamondbacks added two runs in the bottom of the eighth. McCann doubled to left, scoring Arenado and moving Tawa to third for a 4-1 lead. Barrosa followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Tawa and moving McCann to third to make it 5-1.

San Diego used three relievers after King. Yuki Matsui pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, no earned runs and one walk with two strikeouts. Jeremiah Estrada pitched 0.2 innings without allowing a hit, an earned run or a walk, and Wandy Peralta pitched one inning, allowing three hits and two earned runs with no walks and no strikeouts.

Records

The announced attendance was 22,008. Arizona improved to 60-53 with the win, while San Diego fell to 58-55.
