Swanson’s Historic Night

Dansby Swanson delivered a monstrous offensive performance, launching three home runs and driving in eight runs to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 23-3 rout of the San Diego Padres. The historic display occurred at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, where the Cubs overwhelmed the visiting Padres with relentless power and timely hitting.

Swanson’s first blast came in the second inning, a solo shot to left field measuring 397 feet that extended Chicago’s lead to 4-0. He added another solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, a 434-foot drive to center field that made it 9-0. His final home run of the game arrived in the eighth inning, a massive 387-foot shot to left-center field that cleared the bases for a four-run inning, pushing the score to 23-3.

Scoring Breakdown

The Cubs’ offense exploded early. In the top of the first inning, Suzuki hit a 426-foot home run to center field, bringing in Crow-Armstrong and Bregman for a 3-0 Padres lead, but the Cubs quickly turned the tables. After Swanson’s second-inning homer, the Cubs took control in the third. Amaya’s single to center field scored Happ and Suzuki, making it 6-0. Swanson’s third-inning homer followed, extending the lead to 9-0.

The Cubs added more runs in the fifth inning. Conforto homered to center field (433 feet) and Crow-Armstrong homered to right field (390 feet), bringing in Amaya and Swanson to make it 13-2. Conforto added another home run in the sixth inning, a 384-foot shot to left-center field that scored Happ, making it 15-2.

The Padres managed some late runs. Song homered to right-center field (385 feet) in the fifth, and France’s ground-rule double scored Machado, making it 13-2. In the eighth, Andujar’s single scored Taylor, and Alcántara’s single scored Busch. Conforto’s single scored Suzuki, and Amaya’s single scored Alcántara. Swanson’s eighth-inning home run made it 23-3. Busch homered to right-center field (412 feet) in the same inning, ending the scoring at 23-3.

Pitching Decisions

Colin Rea earned the win for the Cubs, pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Trent Thornton pitched one scoreless inning, and Jordan Wicks recorded the save with three innings of work, allowing one earned run on five hits with two strikeouts.

Walker Buehler took the loss for the Padres, pitching four innings and allowing nine earned runs on seven hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Kyle Hart and Rodolfo Duran also pitched for San Diego, combining for seven innings and allowing thirteen earned runs.

The victory improved the Cubs’ record to 49-38, while the Padres fell to 43-42.
