Driverless Taxis Get the Green Light for Alameda County. The Tri-Valley Waits.

Alameda County now sits inside the map where Waymo may legally operate its driverless taxis, after California regulators approved the company's largest service expansion to date.

Waymo announced Friday that the California Public Utilities Commission had cleared its request, which covers 18 counties across Northern and Southern California. "Expansion will be gradual and guided by our safety framework," the company said in announcing the decision.

The scope

Twelve Northern California counties are covered: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo. Six more are in the south: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura. Sacramento and San Diego become entirely new markets for the service.

The decision resolves a filing that had been pending since January. Waymo's Advice Letter No. 4 was suspended by regulators through late September for further review, according to Electrek, with a supplemental filing submitted in May before the approval came through.

Permission, not a timetable

The distinction matters for anyone picturing a driverless car on Main Street. County-level approval sets the legal boundary of where Waymo may operate; it does not commit the company to serving any particular city inside that boundary, and no timeline has been published. Engadget noted that robotaxis are unlikely to appear across all 18 counties right away.

What Friday changed for the Tri-Valley is the paperwork. Whether Pleasanton sees the cars, and when, is a decision that now rests with the company rather than the state.
