Mateo’s 11th-Inning Single Lifts Rays Past Padres 5-4

The Tampa Bay Rays secured a hard-fought victory over the San Diego Padres with a final score of 5-4 in an eleven-inning contest at Tropicana Field. The decisive moment arrived in the bottom of the extra frame when Jorge Mateo singled to left field, driving home Piper for the go-ahead run.

The play extended a tense game that saw both bullpens work tirelessly to keep their teams in contention.

San Diego took an early lead in the fourth inning when Bogaerts singled to center field, allowing France and Merrill to score. The Rays responded later in the same inning as Caminero homered to left center, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Padres regained momentum in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Song, which brought Taylor home to make it 3-1.

Pitching Performances

Robbie Ray started for San Diego, pitching six innings and allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four. He was supported by Bradgley Rodriguez and Adrian Morejon, who each pitched a scoreless inning with no hits or walks allowed. Mason Miller entered in relief but gave up two runs on two hits in his single inning of work.

Yuki Matsui contributed an inning with two strikeouts, while David Morgan took the loss after allowing one run in 0.1 innings.

For Tampa Bay, Drew Rasmussen matched Ray’s workload, throwing six innings with four hits and two earned runs allowed alongside six strikeouts. The Rays’ bullpen was flawless in preservation. Cam Booser, Casey Legumina, Manuel Rodriguez, Bryan Baker, and Tyler Wells each pitched one scoreless inning.

Wells closed out the game with a perfect final frame, striking out two batters to secure his third win of the season.
