The San Francisco 49ers placed wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling on injured reserve and brought defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo onto the active roster before the team’s Week 2 game against the Miami Dolphins. Head coach Kyle Shanahan previously said Stribling is expected to miss nearly 10 weeks because of an ankle injury.
Okoronkwo was previously elevated from the practice squad for San Francisco’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. He played on 30% of the defensive snaps in that contest while the 49ers managed injuries along the defensive line.
San Francisco used nine defensive linemen during its Week 1 rotation, and Okoronkwo is expected to have a comparable role against Miami. The team also added wide receiver Khadarel Hodge to the active roster earlier this week after elevating him for the season opener while Jordan Watkins was unavailable.
Kicker Eddy Piniero and running back Kaelon Black were listed as questionable entering Week 2. The 49ers hosted kickers Greg Joseph and Younghoe Koo for tryouts but signed neither, and the team did not elevate a running back. Black had been limited during practices because of a groin injury.
With Stribling unavailable, San Francisco is expected to use five receivers. The projected group is Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, Deebo Samuel, Hodge and Jacob Cowing, the same group Shanahan indicated the team used in Week 1. Watkins is expected to be inactive for a second consecutive game, though the length of that arrangement is not yet clear.
