Last season, Chargers tight ends contributed 881 receiving yards and three touchdowns to quarterback Justin Herbert. Oronde Gadsden, who led the tight ends with 664 receiving yards and three touchdowns, had a strong rookie season but will now compete with Kolar and David Njoku for the top spot. Njoku, a Pro Bowler in 2023, signed a one-year deal with the team.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that Kolar and Njoku may offer a more well-rounded skill set compared to Gadsden, particularly in blocking. Harbaugh noted that Kolar and Njoku serve as examples for Gadsden to improve his blocking abilities.
Kolar expressed enthusiasm about working with new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, calling him a "wizard" and noting the differences in coaching styles between McDaniel and his previous coach, John Harbaugh. Kolar mentioned that McDaniel has emphasized a strong running game to set up play-action passes, which could enhance Kolar's receiving capabilities.
The Chargers are aiming for a successful season under McDaniel, with hopes of making a third consecutive playoff appearance. The effectiveness of the offensive line and Herbert's development will be crucial as the team integrates Kolar into their offensive strategy.
