The San Francisco 49ers began their season with a 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, but lost second-round draft pick De’Zhaun Stribling to a deltoid ligament sprain. Stribling was ruled out early in the game and is expected to be sidelined for at least a month while treatment decisions are reviewed.
San Francisco finished with 379 total yards despite Stribling’s absence. Demarcus Robinson recorded two catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, including a 39-yard scoring reception in the second quarter. Deebo Samuel Sr. added six receptions for 48 yards and scored during the opening stages of the fourth quarter.
Mike Evans led the receiving group with six catches for 49 yards. He also made several third-down conversions and scored on a fade pass at the start of the third quarter. The report says the 49ers could continue distributing work among their receivers while using each player in different ways.
Jordan Watkins could receive more opportunities after being inactive against the Rams. Watkins is in his second season in the system and has not yet received an extended regular-season role. The report describes him as a possible option for deep routes, shorter completions and rushing-down snaps because of his blocking ability.
Jacob Cowing could also be used in the slot, including on crossing patterns designed to create running room after the catch, although his smaller size could affect his blocking responsibilities.
The report also points to George Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk and Christian McCaffrey as likely contributors in the passing game. McCaffrey is one of the team’s leading pass catchers, while Kittle’s involvement is expected to grow after his return from an Achilles injury.
