The Los Angeles Rams are adopting a different approach regarding their quarterback situation behind Matthew Stafford, as indicated by head coach Sean McVay. On September 4, McVay stated that both Stetson Bennett IV and Ty Simpson are being considered for the backup role, with plans for both players to continue their development throughout the season.
McVay described the situation as unique compared to previous years, emphasizing that both Bennett and Simpson will receive training opportunities. He noted, "I'll tell you when I decide who's going to be the actual 2 in the game," indicating that both players are in contention for the backup position.
The Rams' depth chart lists Bennett as the second quarterback and Simpson as third, but McVay sees them as interchangeable in their roles.
The decision comes after Stafford did not participate in any preseason games, leaving the majority of the quarterback duties to Bennett and Simpson. Bennett completed 62.2% of his passes for 219 yards without touchdowns or interceptions during the preseason. In comparison, Simpson had a strong showing with a completion rate of 78.3%, throwing for 382 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions.
While the Rams' official depth chart is labeled as unofficial, McVay's comments shed light on the team's evolving strategy. He expressed confidence in both quarterbacks, stating that the plan for Week 1 against the 49ers may not be set in stone for the entire season.
The Rams aim to ensure that both players are adequately prepared should the need arise to utilize either one during the season.
