The Los Angeles Rams placed defensive end Myles Garrett on injured reserve after he underwent knee surgery, keeping him out for a minimum of four games. The team announced the move Thursday after Garrett played through the injury in the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
Garrett is expected to miss the Rams’ game against the New York Giants, along with upcoming contests against the Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills. He could become eligible to return in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals, although coach Sean McVay said the team is not treating that game as a deadline.
McVay said Garrett was feeling well and that Los Angeles would not hurry his recovery. Garrett had progressed from using crutches to walking without them, according to the coach. He had also experienced knee swelling during training camp and missed substantial practice time before being cleared to play in the opener.
Garrett took part in 62% of the Rams’ defensive snaps against San Francisco and recorded five pressures, but he did not make a sack or tackle. After the game, he said it was the poorest version of himself he had displayed.
The injury comes shortly after Los Angeles acquired Garrett from Cleveland in June. The trade sent the Browns Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round selection, a 2028 second-round selection and a 2029 third-round selection. Garrett joined the Rams after producing an NFL-record 23 sacks in 2025 and winning Defensive Player of the Year.
