Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has clarified his stance on his long-term future with the franchise. Speaking on the Let's Go! with Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, Peter King & Jim Gray podcast, the 38-year-old explained that he evaluates his playing career on an annual basis rather than committing to multi-year guarantees.
Stafford noted that while other players have extended runways, his personal path remains uncertain and is determined through ongoing discussions with his wife, Kelly, and his daughters.
The quarterback emphasized a desire to be transparent and fair to both the organization and his household. He indicated that this philosophy directly influences his contract negotiations, leading him to prefer one-year extensions. Stafford argued that locking himself into a large, long-term deal could result in significant dead cap space for the team if his performance or personal circumstances change in the future.
He stated that he aims to be prudent while acknowledging that he currently enjoys playing and does not intend to stop anytime soon.
Stafford’s most recent agreement, reached in May 2026, is a one-year extension worth $55 million, with potential incentives that could raise the total to $60 million. This contract keeps him under contract with the Rams through the end of the 2027 season. The deal structure is designed to assist the team in managing its salary cap.
Stafford continues to perform at a high level, having won the 2025 NFL MVP award and previously leading the Rams to a Super Bowl LVI victory.
