The Los Angeles Rams are currently in a holding pattern regarding the future of star player Aaron Donald, as no official decision has been made about his potential return to the team. While the likelihood of his return appears to be increasing, the timeline remains unclear.
Head coach Sean McVay has stated that Donald has earned the right to take his time in making a decision. McVay expressed hope for clarity soon, noting, "I would love to be able to have all this stuff figured out, but like I told you guys from the beginning, he's earned the right."
The Rams are eager to have Donald back, but his absence complicates their ability to make roster moves and adapt their defense.
The Rams currently face challenges with potential suspensions for wide receiver Puka Nacua and offensive tackle Alaric Jackson. If either player is suspended, particularly Jackson, the team may need to consider adding new players. Should Donald decide to return, the Rams would owe him $30 million, but they only have $15 million in cap space available.
To create additional cap space, the Rams could restructure contracts, such as that of Davante Adams, which could free up around $11 million.
The team’s options are limited until Donald makes his decision. The Rams may miss opportunities to sign other players, including left tackle Taylor Decker, if they continue to wait for Donald. Recent injuries to Laremy Tunsil have further complicated the situation, and the Rams have already missed out on potential additions at wide receiver, such as Stephon Diggs and Keenan Allen.
