Los Angeles Rams starting left tackle Alaric Jackson could face an NFL fine after being penalized for an illegal chop block during the team's 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1.
The flag came after 49ers edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo was involved in contact with Jackson and Rams running back Kyren Williams. Officials appeared to view the play as a high-low block involving the two Rams players. NFL rules prohibit that type of combined blocking action, including blocks involving contact at or below the thigh while another offensive player engages the defender above the waist.
Fines for illegal chop blocks can reach $12,537 for a first offense and $18,507 for subsequent offenses. The league reviews game plays after contests, and the penalty could be rescinded if officials determine the contact did not meet the rule's requirements.
Former NFL linebacker Luke Kuechly said during the broadcast that he disagreed with the call, saying Jackson had not gone low on Okoronkwo. Terry McAulay, a former head of NFL officiating, also said the play did not qualify as a chop block and contended that Williams' contact occurred at or above the waist.
