The Los Angeles Rams elevated running back Dean Connors from their practice squad before Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos, giving the undrafted rookie another chance to earn a larger role. Linebacker Elias Neal was also elevated for the second consecutive week.
The move followed Ronnie Rivers’ placement on injured reserve. Coach Sean McVay had identified Connors and Jordan Waters as possible options to join the active roster, then confirmed Friday that Connors would receive the opportunity. The team made the transaction official Saturday.
Connors joined the Rams as an undrafted free agent after the draft and drew attention during the preseason. He carried 26 times for 96 yards and caught seven passes for 53 yards and three touchdowns. His three receiving scores led preseason running backs dating to at least 2013, according to the source material.
McVay said special teams work helped Connors earn the elevation. The coach indicated that Blake Corum and Kyren Williams would handle the team’s main rushing responsibilities, while Connors’ expected role against Denver would primarily be on special teams. Connors played 19 special teams snaps during the preseason, including 13 in the opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Neal also is expected to contribute mainly on special teams, where he played 12 snaps the previous week. His elevation provides additional linebacker depth while Nate Landman manages a shoulder injury. Landman is expected to play against the Broncos but was limited in practice throughout the week.
