Ty Simpson started at quarterback for the Rams during their preseason finale, while Stetson Bennett did not participate. Following the game, head coach Sean McVay clarified that these choices were not indicative of who would serve as the backup quarterback for the upcoming regular season.
McVay explained that the decision to start Simpson was aimed at providing him with valuable experience as he prepares for his rookie season. He emphasized that the team is not yet ready to designate either Simpson or Bennett as the primary backup to starting quarterback Matthew Stafford.
"Obviously, we’ve got the reigning MVP of the league, and then we got two guys that we feel really good about," McVay stated. He expressed confidence in both players, noting that he does not want to limit himself to a premature decision regarding the backup role.
The Rams are set to open their season against the 49ers in Australia in two weeks, indicating that a decision regarding the backup quarterback will need to be made soon.
